Tottenham table £12m bid - Rumour Mill

It's being reported by FansFC that Tottenham have put a £12m bid on the table for Stuart Downing.

It's believed that Middlesbrough are not willing to part ways with their England international but the wide-man himself might fancy the switch.

Downing would fill a needed spot in the Tottenham team and that's why they are willing to bid big money for the right man.

Hello. I have a small gripe about Downing. He needs to grow. He's only little and when he does grow - 3 or 4 years, his feet might be able to reach the ground

What are you on about you strange little man, Downing would be quality for us, would allow Davids and Zokora to compete for their position, and Tainio, Ziegler and Downing competing for the left.

Well, there's no denying that Downing has potential, but will he fulfil it? I worry that there's too much hype over him because he's a left-footed left-winger, and english to boot.

NOT at all impressed with the proposed purchase of Downing. If he couldnt perform for England on the WC international stage then he wont be any additional quality to the squad.

Boa morte would appear to be a much better value acquisition and would add strength and character to the squad.

Downing has a lot of growing up to do and relatively represents a flash in the pan. If Spurs are to buy him let it be at the start of next season when he has truely proved himself to be a man amongst men.

If true the Downing signing would be a welcomed one even at £12 mill. Downing is 22 and will probably be England's left sided midfielder for the next eight years. Put him in a team with Keane,Davids,Lennon,Berbetov,Dawson,King,Jenas and Defoe and boy would he flourish. We have currently three problem possitions Left back right back and left mid.Only when we sign the likes of bridge chimbonda downing can we truly compete with the top four. The downing signing would mean only the fullback positions needing quality players.

Ekotto is quality, disagree with the guy who says we need to buy Bridge. Also, Lee and Lennon on the right wing looked terrific last night, I do however agree that a LW is essential....... us Spurs fans have been saying that all summer! In Jol we trust COYS!

The boy has potential and can cross a ball....but 12m ? I don't think so.

The trouble is, all other managers know that we have the Carrick money to spend, so, the price goes up for Spurs

12 MILL FOR DOWNING? ITS A BIT MUCH FOR SUMONE WHO ONLY LOOKS LIKE AN AVERAGE PLAYER IN A DUFF TEAM. THE BOY LOOKS SLOW, UNIMAGINITIVE AND OVER RATED , BOA MORTE ARE PETROV WOULD BE MUCH BETTER OPTIONS

bid is for 9m borough want 11m, we are also looking at petrov and a huge bid is being launched for a top star - no names

dont bother with downing hasnt been the same player since his injury and as for boa morte 8mill for a 29 year old no thanks lets smash the bank and buy petrov from ath madrid and we need a right back asap pyo is to weak and almost as bad as stalteri the kebab seller coys

Ekkooto yesterday superb, but Lee and Lennon down the right are you joking!! All teams need to do is put a long ball there; there combined height aint even average! We need strong right back - Lucas Neil, Chimbonda- spend the cash stop being tight. As for Downing, 12mill a joke!

Gor for 8mill pederson, or even Keiran Richardson who beta than downing and not even quarter of price!

Lee looked nervous for the first 75mins and is not the right back solution. Ekotto was good last night but as Tainio kept on drifting inside was exposed and not as effective.

Downing is injury prone - do we want a £12m Sicknote no matter how good he is?

Until the right man comes along why not play Lennon and Routledge on the wings?

Hi, I think that there is blantently a space for either ziegler or routledge on that left wing position. I have been a season ticket holder for three seasons and 2 seasons ago reto was fantastic, i can't understand y he hasnt even got a place on the bench, giv him a go. However, i have complete faith in Jol hu knows what he is doin.

I have to agree that all the hype surrounding Downing seems to be simply because he is an englishman with a left foot. He's no better than Etherington and is only in the squad because Maclaren had him at Boro. If he were right footed he wouldn't be anywhere near the England squad. In short I think we're looking at the new Steve Guppy.

Firstly Tainio is not a left winger, he plays there because Martin Jol plays with 3 so called central midfield players !
Secondly we need to look at players to replace Carrick, Zakora is not the answer !
Van Bommel wasn't even in the Barca Squad on Sunday Night !!
He would do !

Downing has no pace, we need someone who can beat a player then cross it. Otherwise we could have kept Reid and saved ourselves £12 million!!

Downing would be a good signing but 12millon , no thanks just coz hes english , its just to much imean we got good money for carrick so how about Boa morte for 7-8 mill and gareth barry for 5 mill both can play on the left but Boa can also play as a striker solving our 4th striker dilemma and barry can play any where in the midfield and also at left back as cover for okey cokey or what ever his name is

we have a few options forleft side as mentioned already, ziegler, routledge! We should be spending as much as possible to secure a truly world class central defender! When Led's out we just don't look good enough at the centre of defence!I rate Daws but davenport or Gardner?? God help us when Shevchenko ZRooney etc get at that centre.

Agree with the comments about Reto Ziegler. I thought he was fantastic a couple of seasons ago. Plenty of pace and not a bad croser of the ball.

Downing's crossing was deadly last night, his link up play was also outstanding. The boy is a massive talent and would provide the balence our team needs.

It's like signing Beckham at 22.

I think we should proceed with caution, Downing is pretty good thats for sure but the hype of there finally being a half decent left footed English player means his price always has and always will be inflated.

Although when you look at the prem league teams, spurs and Martin Jol should be able to offer him better support and development than anyone else and i can see him turning into a class winger if he comes, i dont think we should pay any more than 8 - 10 million for him though.

All we need now is him and a solid right back and Spurs should break into the top 4 no problem.

I agree that as a winger Downing is not as pleasing to the eye as somebody like lennon (not even close in fact). But what he can do is deliver a fantastic cross from anywhere on the left and due to that he does not need to beat players as much as a player like lennon who (if you are honest) will not be the finished atricle until he starts delivering good cross' regularly. Downing is a bit more like Becks in that sense, he whips balls round defenders instead of taking them on. He would be quality. COYS.

spurs will never get into the top 4 this season they are the most overrated team and worse they have a french manager

As much as I dislike Lucas Neil, I think he would be a good player to have in our team, he gets stuck in and isn't that bad on the ball. Lee is just to weak, and always seems to get caught the wrong side of his man. Think Ekotto was one of our best players the other night, he is also not afraid to get stuck in a nd looks to have a useful left foot, however i can see a couple of red cards for him this year. Left wing is a tough one, 12m is an awful lot of money for someone who hasn't really proved an awful lot in the premier league, but we do need someone....
