Should Tottenham go for Downing? - Your view

Rumours regarding a move for Stuart Downing from Middlesbrough to Tottenham have been huge throughout the past week.

Should Tottenham make a big bid for Downing? How much do you think he's worth? Let us know below in the comments section (all comments are moderated).

It's going to take a big sum of money to get Middlesbrough talking but it's known that Tottenham have it because of the huge sale of Michael Carrick to Man Utd.

I think downing whould fix are left midfield problem. He set up the goal against chelsea and he allso scored on the opening day. He would be a great signing. I think that £10M - £12M should get him.

Average player and a Middlesboro fan so think its just romours although we need a left winger what about Richardson of Man U he would come as ronaldo is not going to give way.

He would be a good signing. Naturally left footed, England squad and we'll see a lot of him as a sub for the National team. Good vision and passer of the ball, can only develop. Look at the development of our youngsters under MJ and the coaches. Pay no more than 9 mil. Value will go up and up.

I think that Downing is another Andy Reid ie although his crossing is good, he will rarely get in a position to put a good one in.
What I mean is that he has neither the pace or trickery to get past premiership defenders.
I think that potentialy Zeiglar could offer us a better solution.
He played great in the friendly against Sociadad, and he is about the same age as Downing+ he wouldn`t cost 10million!!!!

I'd rather have Downing than Duff. He is a future regular full international and for his age he is effective and this is what we need.

When we signed Lennon I had to tell most Spurs fans who he was and where he came from and look at him now.

Not only that, for those who say he is not that good (TV fans views, always make me laugh) I am sure Jol will make him better

I think downing is average at best and is only in the England squad because McClaren is manager.Try Reto Ziegler he was quality first season if noti feel either Richardson or Adam Johnson would suit us perfectly. I also think we should go for Malbranque as a replacement for Jenas.
UP THE YIDS!

I say keep the money or spend it on a right back - Chimbonda. Downing is not worth 10m, Id give 5m for him.

I would say if Jol and others are 100% sure that Zieglar is not up to it then yes 100% go for Downing but no more than 10 mil. He is natural left, has genuine pace and will be very good for us esp away from home. Cant see how we can get away with buying him for less than 10 mil after getting more than 18 for Carrick..

I think he's a better than average player, but the amounts I've seen quoted do seem a bit excessive for a player that's still more potential than proven talent. Personally I'd rather see Petrov come from Atletico, now there's a player that offers alot of things we lack in midfield...pace, a powerful shot and someone who can actually take a decent free kick.

Im sick of this rumour , how many times has this topic come up..hmm.. let me think ...about ten million times or so and would you look at that isnt it just amazing here it is yet again. I have something much more interesting to discuss you see I have this freckle about two inches left of my right butt cheek and no matter how many times I try and scratch it its still awfully itchy and very annoying. So with that I suggest a poll, should Tottenham pay for the treatment of my troublesome freckle or should I continue to scratch it with no concrete plan? On a serious note the boys & management did us proud against Sheff Utd, we salute you, thats more like it and long may it continue. With regard to the left midfield position, at this stage my brain is fried with it and I really dont care anymore I think we've plenty of quality players surely someone we alreaady have can do the job?.. Routledge perhaps. In this day and age all professional footballers should be able to use both their feet, with ease I might add. It should be anyway but thirty grand a week says it defo should be no excuses so someone please get it sorted and get out on that left wing and do what your told which is to stay out there, run at people when you have the ball and chase back/ defend when you dont simple as that.Sorry if I went on a bit but what can you do I care. Roll on Saturday always a pleasure to play Everton at the Lane..Berbatov hatrick maybe?

If we are looking at a left sided player then we have to look around to see who is availabe, not many class acts out there and english players are being priced out of the market, not a lot of mention of Denilson who would come on a free, maybe until the next transfere window he might be worth taking a chance on or give Zigler a chance to prove himself

Nah. he is a good player. We need a very good player there. He is only a slight upgrade to what we already have. Englands lack of left options is the only reason he gets any press.

Too bloody right they should..Duff would have been my choice but forced to sign for Newcastle rejects association after somehow turning Liverpool and US down.

There is no better natural left winger than Downing at this moment so if he is a rarity then of course he is worth the money and we should go and get him.

Forget Downing. Play a diamond formation with Keano at the top, Zakora at the bottom, Lennon switching from wing to wing and one other.

He's a good player for middlesbro no? If JOL wants him then so be it!!He will improve the player no question, and the squad would be balanced all the more so why not?
There comes a time when fitting the final peices of the jigsaw puzzle that budget goes out the window maybe the time is NOW!! COYS!!

Why not try Keane on the left? He can take people on, create something from nothing. Look at the croses he put in on Tuesday!

I say try that and spend a little bit on another striker :-)

Would Keane want to play there? Not sure

I think that Downing is a world class player and Spurs would get into the Champions League easily with both a great defencive and attacking partenership.
COME ON YOU LILY WHITES!!!!!!!!!!

The fact that we're even asking the question shows how few decent left-wingers there are at the moment. IMO Downing is only adequately skilled, but too slow. If you haven't got speed when you're young, you'll never have it & we've just sold one slow winger. I'd be more inclined to go for Boro's Andy Johnson - he does look useful on the left.

Routledge is the best alternative, enough pace and trickery there to play on either side. Both he and Ziegler deserve to be given a chance.

You can stop talking about getting Downing because you have no chance, he is a Boro lad and he is going to stay that way!

Downing would add the perfect balance to the midfield on the left and would be an excellent signing. However I am convinced it will never happen.Boro boy, home club, already in the England squad.....never going to happen i'm afraid people!

downing is a gd player but i would pay no more than 9 mil for him. it not as if there isnt other sollutions with us jus signin a £10million playa (zokora) we cant be leaving him out of the team then theres ttainio who u cant leave out the team either so the only sollution is to play tainio on the left zokora in the centre and lennon on the right n let davids n jenas fight it out for the second cm spot. or we could sign luis boa morte who could do for a couple of years n save ziegla for the future. personally i would rather buy pascal chimbonda for the 6mil they are asking for him than pay ovr 9mil for downing and play tainio on the left. sorted!

why buy downing for 6 mil less than we sold carrick for.... ? that just doesnt make any sense...

boro fan here, downing wont go, he dont want to go, he is happy here, so jol wants to get over himself and move on to some1 else, and i wish some1 would start some new crap up.... this has been going on far to long now, and ppl are bored with it... if he really wanted to go he would of went by now or put a transfer request in dont ya think!!

Downing is pants - I sincerely hope we do not waste a considerable sum of money on such an overrated mediocre player.

There are plenty of outstanding left sided players in the world that would be suitable, I feel that looking at Downing is being shortsighted.

Downing is toilet, end of story.
