Liverpool midfielder sets sights on England team

Liverpool summer signing Jermaine Pennant is hoping he can force his way into the England team.

Once at Arsenal, then sold to Birmingham who were relegated to the Championship last season, Liverpool picked up Pennant and are set to give him a great chance to recover his career by featuring in the Champions League, something that will boost his chances of making the England squad.

Pennant also feels that without David Beckham in the England team, it's there for the taking.

"It can only improve my England chances," said Pennant.

"If you're proving yourself in the Champions League and playing well, it's going to be at the back of the England manager's mind to pick you.

"The more I play in these games, the better it's going to be for me. This is why I came to Liverpool.

"The only thing left for me is to play for my country and if that could happen it would be a great turnaround for me.

"With Becks out of the team, it's there for the taking.

"England have already got two players for that role in Shaun Wright-Phillips and Aaron Lennon, while Steven Gerrard showed he could play there too.

"It's going to be difficult but I can offer something different."
