Move Now or Book Your Summer Holidays

With the transfer window well and truly open the England hopefuls below would be well advised to move clubs before January 31st and get themselves some regular action.

Wayne Bridge (Chelsea)
WHY: Was neck and neck with Ashley Cole, then he was definite second choice, now we're not quite sure where he stands. Some regular football between now and the summer would guarantee a trip to Germany.

WHERE: Liverpool seems ideal. If Djimi Traore can get a game for the European champions then anyone can.

Shaun Wright-Phillips (Chelsea, again)
WHY: Last seasons golden boy but now reduced to 30 minutes here and there for Chelsea. Desperately needs to impress in the Premiership, it's not as if he can point to his England performances.

WHERE: Back at Man City would be great, but they can't afford him. Arsenal would be the clever destination, as it would have been in the summer.

Kieran Richardson (Man Utd)

WHY: Competition for United's left wing spot is Park, Giggs and Ronaldo, plus Fergie has just signed Patrice Evra for £5.5 million so any further games at left back are out.

WHERE: Back to West Brom, maybe on loan again, but could also play for a team higher up the table.

Andy Johnson (Crystal Palace)

WHY: Championship goals don't count.

WHERE: Anywhere in the Premier League would do. Man City, Newcastle and Villa are always after a striker.

Jermaine Defoe, Aaron Lennon (Tottenham Hotspur)

WHY: Martin Jol isn't doing them any favours. He's told Defoe he can be a sub and still go to the World Cup, while he's said Lennon probably won't go and should spend more time in the Under-21s.

WHERE: Somewhere with a more supportive manager.

One man going nowhere though, according to Jose Mourinho is Frank Lampard, who the Chelsea boss says will stay at Stamford Bridge "until the end of his career."

Defoe definitely needs to move on. He should be England's third choice forward behind Owen and Rooney, ahead of Crouch, Heskey, et al. The thinking with Crouch is that he makes a good target man for someone like Owen but the problem with that is any defender worth a damn will just push him off the ball. And Rio Ferdinand is rubbish. His little brother is already better.

Defoe maybe should be third choice striker, though an Owen/Defoe partnership wouldn't work since they're so similar. It seems logical to take Defoe as a direct Owen replacement.

Not sure Rio Ferdinand is actually rubbish but he's definitely not as reliable as Campbell or Terry. Or King or Carragher for that matter. How long before Anton Ferdinand plays for England?

I agree, Defoe and Owen are essentially the same, so together they don't make sense. He makes for great insurance if Owen doesn't regain form following his injury. I also like Bent, but I'm not sure he's ready for full national duty.

As for the Ferdinands, I don't think Rio has any business being on the team, basically because of all the players you listed. I think Terry and Carragher should be the pairing. Carragher has looked fabulous for Liverpool this season and Terry is as solid as England can get. I think Anton will get his chance shortly after the World Cup during Euro 2008 qualifying and will impress.

Defoe should do himself a favour and start scoring more goals as his performances have been poor this season hence Martin Jol dropping him in favour of the in-form Robbie Keane.

I don't see how Jol telling Aaron Lennon who hasn't played a dozen Premiership games yet to be patient and not get his head turned by the World Cup is him being unsupportive. A bit of calming sense for Lennon who has many years to play for England if his career keeps progressing the way it has started at Spurs.

It's true that Jol may have been trying to keep Lennon's feet on the ground, no one knows what's been said inside White Hart Lane.

But it would have been preferable if Jol had said something like "if he keeps playing well, then it's not impossible" rather than ruling it out altogether.

Don't want to start a bandwagon, but if SWP is still out of sorts come the summer, Lennon would be a great player to have on the England bench.
